Laura Hand Biography

Laura Hand is an American news anchor and Community Affairs Director.  She is best known for working at NBC 3-WSTM-TV as the news anchor on Weekend Today in Central New York, Saturday, and Sunday mornings for five decades before signing off on October 12, 2019. Laura was also an anchor and producer at NBC 3’s Monday Night Answer Desk segments viewers would call or email questions about specific topics of concern to a panel of experts.

Laura got into news broadcasting while studying at Syracuse University. In the 1969-70 school year, she served as news director for WAER-FM. She spent the following summer as editor of “Report to the Middle East” at the Voice of America in Washington. After receiving a degree in journalism and political science in 1971, she joined WFBL radio as a news reporter for two years.

 Laura Hand Syracuse TV anchor signed off the air for the last time on October 12, 2019, ending a five decades-long career in broadcast journalism.

Laura was the first female reporter on NBC3 News (WSTM-TV) and one of the nation’s first female TV journalists when she began her career 47 years ago on Election Night in 1972. She announced her retirement in August 2019 and bid farewell on the CNY Central station Saturday.

“It’s time. It was not something that I woke up one morning and said I’m going to retire. I’ve known for essentially a year that this would be the time to go. It’s really time to move on,” Hand said on CNY Central.

Laura also read a poem by Violet Vela, who attended this year’s New York State Fair and wrote an impromptu piece for Hand based on the word “goodbye.”

In honor of her 47 years of dedication to Central New York, journalism, and WSTM, CNYCentral is proud to announce the NBC3 studio on James Street will now be known as the “Laura Hand Studio.

Laura Hand is best known for being the news anchor on Weekend Today in Central New York, Saturday, and Sunday mornings on NBC 3 for five decades before signing off on October 12, 2019. She was not only anchoring Channel 3’s noon newscast but also puts the program together every day.

She also hosted and produced “Our Community” each Sunday, produces and writes the community calendar feature “3 in Touch,” and is the web content manager for CNY Entertainment on wstm.com. Until a few years ago, Laura was the early morning news anchor and producer/anchor for public affairs documentaries.

She also anchored and produced NBC 3’s Monday Night Answer Desk segments viewers can call or email questions about specific topics of concern to a panel of experts. In November 2017 Laura celebrated her 45 years being on NBC 3. Peter Hall is also the morning meteorologist for NBC-3 Today in Central New York, weekdays first at 4 a.m. through 7 a.m. and through the Today Show into mid-morning.

Laura’s most ‘unfavorite’ words are ‘there’s nothing to do here which is why she maintains the “In Your Community” website events calendar, and also produces ‘Weekends Best Bets’ and ‘The Week Ahead’ to help Central New Yorkers be aware of how much is available here, much of it volunteer-driven.

For the past several years, Laura has emceed the Italian Flag raising at Syracuse City Hall, which opens La Festa Italiana.

She added the position of community relations director to her resume in January 1993. In that role, Laura’s responsibilities include developing campaigns to increase Channel 3’s visibility in the community, producing and tracking public service announcements, and involving members of the station staff in community activities.

In community activities, Laura could be the role model for involvement. She is vice-chair of the Salvation Army’s Advisory Board, working on marketing and annual resource development. She initiated the annual Tree of Lights gift program during the Christmas holidays and expanded the Salvation Army’s Dome Day food donation program.

For all of these activities, Laura has won a large number of awards. She was named an SU Outstanding Alumna in 1992; She received the Marguerite Higgins Journalism Prize for Gulf War coverage; a National Merit Award from the Community Action Network for the “Feed the Hungry” campaign in 1994; three awards from the Associated Press and 10 from the Syracuse Press Club, including two SPC Professional Standards awards. Laura is listed in “Who’s Who of American Women.
