Mathai anchors newscasts for NBC Bay Area KNTV at 5 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm and hosts The Interview series. The series sets Mathai with newsmakers like U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom of California, and General Colin Powell. In 2013, Mathai conducted exclusive interviews with John McAfee about his life and legal problems, including the death and suspected murder of American expatriate Gregory Viant Faull in Belize.

Mathai field anchors KNTV’s breaking news and big event coverage including Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, the San Jose floods, the Las Vegas massacre, and the 2016 San Bernardino shootings. He led the coverage of the 2013 Asiana Airlines crash at San Francisco International Airport by KNTV. He was on the air for seven consecutive hours and was the first journalist to interview a crash survivor. Mathai is also a moderator for the San Francisco Commonwealth Club of California.
Mathai was a sportscaster for the NBC Bay Area between 1998-2010 prior to his News career. In 1995, when he began at KYMA, he became the first Indian sportscaster for a network affiliate in the United States.
