Tyre Nichols was an African American man who passed away on January 10, 2023, three days after officers from the Memphis Police Department pulled him over for a traffic violation. Nichols was first pulled over on January 7 for allegedly engaging in reckless driving, as reported by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). According to the TBI’s report, there was a “confrontation,” then Nichols ran away, and then there was another confrontation. After Nichols’s complaint that she was having trouble breathing, an ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Both the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice have started looking into Nichols’s death.

Relatives of Nichols asserted that the officers who beat him were in an unmarked vehicle and that the beatings were the direct cause of his cardiac arrest and kidney failure. The allegations of excessive “use of force” during the arrest were brought to the attention of the TBI on January 7 by District Attorney Steve Mulroy, who contacted the agency.
